Attention Gmail users: Google to delete your unused accounts

Google is taking this measure for security reasons, and they plan to do it slowly and carefully, with plenty of notice.

Google recently made an announcement regarding the deletion of unused personal accounts that have been inactive for two years or more. The policy will apply to various Google services, including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Meet, Google Calendar, as well as content within Google Workspace, YouTube, and Google Photos. However, Google has clarified that this deletion process will not affect accounts belonging to organizations such as schools or businesses, focusing solely on personal accounts.

Starting from December, Google plans to commence the deletion process gradually and with prior notice. Before erasing an account, Google will send multiple notifications over several months to the account email address and the designated recovery email address, if provided.

Google emphasizes the security concerns associated with abandoned accounts. These accounts are significantly more susceptible to unauthorized access, as they are often lacking in two-step verification and rely on outdated or reused passwords that may have been compromised. In addition, abandoned accounts receive fewer security checks from the user, rendering them vulnerable to misuse. Once compromised, these accounts can be exploited for activities ranging from identity theft to spreading spam or other malicious content.

To prevent the deletion of your account and ensure the safety of your photos and other data, Google recommends logging in to your Google Account at least once every two years. Engaging in various activities such as reading or sending emails, utilizing Google Drive, watching YouTube videos, downloading apps from the Google Play Store, conducting searches on Google, or using the "Sign in with Google" feature for third-party apps or services will help maintain account activity.

If you are concerned about the fate of your old documents, photos, and other records, Google advises initiating a housekeeping process. It is also crucial to provide a recovery email during sign-up and ensure that the recovery email address in your account settings remains up-to-date.
